Hike to Puna Pau

Hike through the open, gently rolling landscape of Easter Island to Puna Pau, a former volcanic crater and the island’s only known source of the red volcanic scoria used to create the distinctive pukao of the moai. The approximately 2.2 km trail crosses mainly grassy volcanic terrain and involves around 120 metres of elevation gain. At the quarry, discover the impressive red stone cylinders that were once placed as headdresses on the island’s monumental moai and learn how they were carved and transported. The easy hike takes approximately 2–3 hours and offers beautiful views across the landscape around Hanga Roa.
