Stargazing on Easter Island

As soon as darkness falls over Rapa Nui, the island transforms. The last lights of Hanga Roa fade into the distance, the landscape grows still, and a sky opens up over the volcanic hills—one that can be experienced in only a few places in the world. Located far out in the Pacific and with hardly any artificial light, Easter Island offers exceptional conditions for observing the southern night sky.

Away from the island’s few lights, the journey through the night begins with a glance upward. The Milky Way, the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds, planets, and distant nebulae become visible to the naked eye and through a telescope. As your eyes slowly adjust to the darkness, a seemingly endless sea of stars transforms into a landscape of constellations, planets, and points of light.

But on Rapa Nui, gazing at the sky is about more than just astronomy. For the early Polynesian seafarers, the stars served as a navigational system on their voyages across the Pacific. In this remote place, it becomes clear how celestial bodies, seasons, and natural signs were interconnected, and what significance the night sky held for the navigation and culture of the Rapa Nui people.

A special moment awaits you next at Ahu Nau Nau (official guide required). The moai stand in the darkness at the edge of Anakena Bay, while the southern night sky shines above them—an unusual perspective on the famous stone statues and a striking interplay of archaeology, landscape, and night.
