Rano Kau and Orongo Hike
Experience the spectacular volcanic landscapes of Easter Island on a half-day hike to Rano Kau and onward to Orongo. The approximately 7–10 km route climbs steadily through open grassland and uneven volcanic terrain towards the rim of Rano Kau, gaining around 230 metres in elevation depending on the starting point. From the crater rim, enjoy breathtaking views over the vast reed-covered crater lake and the Pacific Ocean. Continue along the rim to the ceremonial village of Orongo, dramatically perched on the cliffs above the sea. Here, learn about Rapa Nui culture and the famous Birdman ceremonies that once took place at this sacred site. The hike is easy to moderate, takes place mostly in exposed terrain with little shade, and is accompanied by an accredited local guide.
